South East England Biodiversity Forum

Habitat Targets

Targets for the UK BAP habitats have been set for 2015. In the South East region the Biodiversity Opportunity Areas will be the focus for delivery of these targets. These follow the national format and represent the contribution toward the national targets that we aim to deliver by 2015.

The targets fall into one of four Target Types, maintaining extent, achieving condition,  restoration and expansion/creation.

Definitions of target types

Maintaining extent = maintaining the total area covered by the habitat as recorded in the regional BAP habitat inventory.

Achieving condition  = maintaining and/or improving the condition of existing BAP habitat through ongoing management and/or one off interventions with long term impact.

Restoration = restoration targets apply to areas of habitat that do not reach the BAP definition but still have some of the species characteristic of that habitat type (the relevant species for each BAP habitat are listed in the BAP habitat definitions).

Expansion or creation = expansion targets apply to areas that do not have species characteristic of the habitat one is trying to create.

SEEBF reports on the delivery of SEBS

Reports against the habitat targets will include two elements for each target.

  • The area under an appropriate management agreement (e.g. HLS)

The first report following this format has been produced with data dating from the end of 2010 and will be added to the SEEBF website once finalised.

2008 Habitat Reports

In 2008 SEEBF produced reports on a number of key habitats. Please see the following links for details:
